Minjujuui In'min Konghwaguk, country occupying the northern half of
the Korean peninsula in East Asia. The country is about 445 miles
(716 km) long from southwest to northeast and approximately 225
miles (360 km) wide from east to west. It is separated from China
and Russia to the north by the Yalu (Amnok) and the Tumen (Tuman)
rivers and is bordered by South Korea and the Yellow Sea to the
south, by Korea Bay to the southwest, and by the Sea of Japan
(East Sea) to the east. The capital is P'yongyang (see photograph).
Area 47,399 square miles (122,762 square km). Pop. (1996 est.)
23,904,000.
