Japan Center Malls guide: books, ramen and Japanese shopping
Books and ramen make a good starting point for a Japan Center visit. Browse Japanese and English titles, then leave time for matcha or household finds. Its malls sit within San Francisco's Japantown, so a first visit can stay centered on a few shops without trying to cover the whole neighborhood.
This guide covers the East and West malls and the Kinokuniya building as one Japan Center destination. Shops use different street and suite numbers, so meet at the business address below.

Get directions to the Kinokuniya starting point. The Japan Center directory is useful for the East and West malls; Kinokuniya publishes its own store information.
Where to start
Kinokuniya: give the bookstore time
1581 Webster Street
Kinokuniya's San Francisco store page describes two floors of browsing. The first has Japanese and English manga, art books and anime merchandise; the second has general Japanese and English books, magazines and gifts.
For a book focused visit, make this your main stop and leave the meal time flexible. If you are shopping for a particular title or language edition, check availability with the store before going.
Marufuku Ramen: plan a noodle meal
1581 Webster Street, Suite 235
Marufuku's Japan Center branch page confirms the suite and provides local ordering information. The restaurant's menu overview describes Hakata pork bone ramen and chicken paitan ramen, alongside small rice bowls and appetizers.
This makes a sit down meal a natural part of the outing. Choose the San Francisco Japan Center location when checking details or placing an order, since the restaurant has several Bay Area branches.
Matcha Cafe Maiko: add a tea or dessert break
1581 Webster Street, Suite 175
The operator's San Francisco store list identifies the Webster Street branch separately from its other city locations. Its brand menu includes matcha soft serve, parfaits, tea and lattes, with selection varying by store.
You can make this a short stop after browsing or save it for after lunch. Check the branch's current selection when ordering rather than planning around every item shown on the brand menu.
Daiso: browse household goods and small finds
22 Peace Plaza, Suites 400 and 410
The Japan Center district listing places Daiso at 22 Peace Plaza in the East mall. It adds a different kind of shopping to the visit, with household goods, general merchandise and snacks.
Daiso's Japan Center announcement provides more information about the branch. Use the Japan Center location when searching for the store; a visit here is a separate shopping stop from the Webster Street businesses above.
A books and lunch afternoon
Start with the part of the visit you care about most. For books and manga, allow unhurried time at Kinokuniya, then plan lunch at Marufuku. Add Matcha Cafe Maiko if you want tea or dessert, and set aside another shopping block for Daiso if household goods are on your list.
You can also keep the outing shorter by choosing the bookstore and one food stop. The two to three hour allowance is an editorial estimate, not a measured walking route or a promise about restaurant waits. Check the addresses as you move between buildings.
Before you go
Peace Plaza construction is active. Follow signed pedestrian detours and check the city project updates before visiting. Shops remain accessible during the work.
Use the mall directory for additional East and West mall shops and check individual schedules. These four selections are a starting point, not a full tenant list or a guide to every business in Japantown.
