Pacific Renaissance Plaza guide: dim sum and a cultural stop in Oakland Chinatown

Pacific Renaissance Plaza combines dining with cultural and library spaces in Oakland Chinatown. A visit can center on a meal at Peony, with the Asian Branch Library or Oakland Asian Cultural Center added when their schedules line up.

Check those schedules before choosing a day. The library is closed on Sundays, and the cultural center lists regular public hours Wednesday through Saturday. An event at the cultural center may need separate planning. This guide stays within the plaza rather than covering all of Chinatown.

Get directions to Pacific Renaissance Plaza. Peony and the cultural center are on the second floor. The library entrance is at Suite 190.

Where to start

Peony Seafood Restaurant: dim sum and Cantonese seafood

388 9th Street, Suite 288, second floor

Peony's own website identifies the restaurant inside Pacific Renaissance Plaza and describes dim sum and Cantonese seafood. Make this your dining stop if those are what your group wants to eat.

Check the restaurant's current lunch and dinner schedule before settling on an arrival time. Contact the restaurant directly for group arrangements rather than assuming a large table will be available.

Oakland Asian Cultural Center: plan around the program

388 9th Street, Suite 290, second floor

The cultural center's visitor page explains how to reach its second floor space. Its website lists events and classes, so look at the current program before deciding what to include in your visit.

A listed program may have its own admission or registration requirements. Do not assume an exhibition or performance is available whenever the building is open. If one event is your reason for coming, plan the meal around its confirmed time.

Asian Branch Library: a quieter stop

388 9th Street, Suite 190

The Oakland Public Library branch page confirms the entrance inside Pacific Renaissance Plaza. Use it to check current hours, closures and branch events before adding a library visit to the outing.

The branch has books in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese, plus an Asian Interest collection in English. Allow time to browse and follow the library's visitor and food rules.

Choose the schedule first

If a cultural center program is the main reason for coming, start with that booking and choose a meal time around it. Otherwise, make Peony the main stop and add the library when it is open.

About two hours is an editorial planning allowance for a meal and another stop. An event can make the visit longer, while a meal alone can be shorter. This is not a measured walking route or a promise about service times.

Before you go

The cultural center's visitor page has transit directions and garage information. The library also identifies nearby paid parking. Check posted rates and access rules on the day; no free parking or validation is assumed here.

These are selected stops within one plaza. Nearby Chinatown businesses are outside this guide's scope. For another East Bay destination, see our Pacific East Mall guide.
